Paragliding as recreational sports became pronounced early 2008 in the country with prominent personality of Mr. Randell Raymundo doing the activities in Metro Manila. In the years to come, the interest grew and pilots developed their skills via international trainings establishing network of interest in the Asia Pacific Region.

September 2014 marked the first International event participated by South East Asian and European countries with estimated pilot participants of 50 thereby paving the way for the first local government unit of Sarangani General Santos to see the tourism potential of the event.

Currently, another World Cup Event is in the making at Sarangani General Santos Philippines and the local growth of the paragliding community in Sarangani is developing specially the tourist attraction of the tandem flights.

In Manila, the same consciousness is evolving with the continued growth of students and pilots for the paragliding sports activities.

Paragliding is the recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying. Paragliders are lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells. Wing shape is maintained by the suspension lines, the pressure of air entering vents in the front of the wing, and the aerodynamic forces of the air flowing over the outside.

The Wing

The wing itself is constructed of rip-stop nylon from which the pilot is suspended by strong Kevlar lines. These high-performance fabrics coupled with a growing comprehension of our micro-meteorology have permitted the development of our incredible sport. The pilot is buckled into a harness and finds the sitting position which provides the most comfort.

Paragliders operate in unprecedented harmony with the natural elements. Slow flying speeds (about 15 to 25 mph) enable the paraglider to climb in small thermals. Paraglider flights can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometers, though flights of one to two hours and covering some tens of kilometers are more the norm. By skilful exploitation of sources of lift, the pilot may gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand meters.

The Harness

The pilot is loosely and comfortably buckled into a harness, which offers support in both the standing and sitting positions. Most harnesses have foam or airbag protectors underneath the seat and behind the back to reduce the impact on failed launches or landings. Modern harnesses are designed to be as comfortable as a lounge chair in the sitting position. Many harnesses even have an adjustable "lumbar support". A reserve parachute is also typically connected to a paragliding harness.
